I absolutely hate when a person tries to force "help" upon me, and just makes my life more complicated. Happens constantly. Gotten into the habit of asking if I may help before acting to prevent myself from doing the same.
Another perspective to consider: More often than not, when I ask a question, it is for the interaction and connection with another person. Not for the actual answer. A dumb question can serve a good purpose. However, people shouldnt just take each other's word for it when they ask questions. Youve got all the world's information in your pocket at all times. Theres no excuse to make no effort toward finding truth, or something that resembles it.
For some time now I have been raging in my head against helpfulness. But the kind that keeps the wheels on the bus going round and round. Ordinary people are by nature helpful, they try to be useful, keep busy, volunteering much more than they are paid for. The only unhelpful people are executives who know people are naturally charitable and how to exploit that. What horrible thoughts eh? I know. But seriously, we all need to stop helping.

I agree with you. In this case, I think asking for permission is different than asking because of sloth or ignorance.

Good point. The best questions, I feel, do both: interact and inquire in order to get to know not only the person, but also some truth.
On another sense of the word, as a businessman, I can attest that good help is hard to find these days.
Let alone good people!
