I wonder what you think of the concept of camaraderie?
When you find yourselves sharing space and time, and the larger human condition, with people who, at first, you don't really care over and above for, but slowly the bonds create themselves, just by the virtue of sharing a reality.
I have had instances where I've been put with people who I wouldn't have consciously cared for to become friendly with, but then time let's slip a joke between us, and "hey, what's up", "how you been?" even as we continue to engage with our shared reality (say the gym, the dormitory or even the workplace) and then whole trajectory reveals itself.
It's not through conscious effort and intention of striking up a friendship, although at some point things have to become conscious annd deliberate. But rather recognizing camaraderie (at least in my experience) is being open to other person as another living breathing thing sharing a reality with you.
