How easy it is to let up on skepticism when summertime is here, and the living is, well, not exactly easy, but give or take a few threats of nuclear war, not so bad.

In a word, don't. Don't stop questioning, now or ever. Be a gadfly, but be one that does homework. If there's no information available when you want to do research, add a "why is that?" to your list.

Never take a vacation from seeking the truth.

Excellent story for this time in our history. VERY clever and well done and unfortunately people see what they want to see. Or in the words of the The Boxer from Simon and Garfunkel: "A man hears what he wants to hear and disregards the rest." Thanks for the story.

They said it on NBC, that the polar icecaps would melt off completely by the year 2013. Experts agreed, at least 97% of scientists, that is, that the Earth was headed toward a catastrophe of unheralded proportions. Like, for sure, rising oceans that will swamp all ocean front cities. They said be sure not to buy property in Miami Beach, or Buenos Aires, or Portland.

Then, NBC reported there was a virus. A chunk of genetic material, maybe from a pangolin (or a trampoline?). And a piece of that material broke off of NBC, from the lower B gene, and entered, everyone agreed, into the nation’s bloodstream.

The virus circulated widely, leaving only NPC, a damaged chromosome, capable only of self-propagation. Scientists agreed, again, that the NPC became plural, and soon there were NPCs all over the place. They watched NBC, or Modified Synthetic NBC, or CNN and nodded their heads. All was Truth, and please pass the Soy.
