I've often said to new managers that the beginning of managerial wisdom is to realize that the people on your team have lives and hopes and ambitions and dreams that have absolutely nothing to do with work or working for you
Loved this Tom! The parallel to film/tv really spoke to me. Feel like I’ve had a similar realization over the past couple years studying acting + filmmaking.
I also liked that line. Thanks for writing this thoughtful article. It made me think of a line from one of my favorite short stories, Stephen Crane’s “The Open Boat”: “Perhaps an individual must consider his own death to be the final phenomenon of nature.” We humans can be pretty self-absorbed, but we could be less so, as you suggest. As an English professor, I believe reading good books can help us to broaden our awareness of others’ lives and empathize.

Amen! Making a living ≠ making a life.

Humility allows us not to think less of ourselves, but to think of ourselves less 🙌🏼 🧠
Thanks DMan!
