I dont understand the study. Is it saying there is an immediate effect from using ai? Or a cumulative effect? It seems hard to find people that would have used ai enough in the last few years for this to have a measurable impact.
Yes, immediately. “Participants were divided into three groups: LLM, Search Engine, and Brain-only (no tools). Each completed three sessions under the same condition. In a fourth session, LLM users were reassigned to Brain-only group (LLM-to-Brain), and Brain-only users were reassigned to LLM condition (Brain-to-LLM). A total of 54 participants took part in Sessions 1-3, with 18 completing session 4. We used electroencephalography (EEG) to assess cognitive load during essay writing, and analyzed essays using NLP, as well as scoring essays with the help from human teachers and an AI judge.”
I legit laughed out loud at “I dream of Gini” and am only upset because I am not sure I know anyone else who both knows what that is and has a sense of humor.
The mental atrophy from AI is a constant fear but I think we can reach that balance with enough effort. The freeing of the best among us to create the earth shattering ideas that really drive humanity forward, in fact an economy that demands nothing less, sounds like an exciting time to be alive. Thanks for posting!
Hi Tom. I’ve been thinking about AI a lot recently, and actually wrote about it this morning. Your comments are insightful. Quality over quantity. Thanks.

Wow. It makes me think that there are ways to align chatbots to incite/prompt instead of supply insights.
In the future, questions > answers
